WOLF PACK DEFEAT ISLANDERS AGAIN WEDNESDAY

Image
By: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT -  The Hartford Wolf Pack used two early goals in both the first and second periods and rode 29 saves by Dylan Garand to snap a two-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Bridgeport Islanders. The win for the Pack came at a heavy cost as they lost Riley Nash, who was lost playing in his first game back after returning from injury, and Anton Blidh to injury as well. The losses forced Head Coach Steve Smith to play with just ten forwards for much of the game on Wednesday night at the XL Center. The AHL is trying to make three games in three days rare, and with the Wolf Pack currently, a struggling team beset with injuries and recalls, they have a second one in a 72-hour span and are in the midst of a six-games in an eight-day stretch. Over this part of the stretch, Bridgeport, who is dead last in the league, was on the calendar for this matchup, and have played tough against the Pack this season and beat them last Friday. The Cleveland M...

TAPANI GOAL GIVES PWHL BOSTON A 3-1 WIN

Image
By: Shay Costa, Howlings LOWELL, MA -  Susanna Tapani scored the game-winner 45 seconds into the second period, ending PWHL Boston's four-game losing streak in a 3-1 win over PWHL Ottawa 3-1, before 1,889 at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Massachusetts, on Wednesday. On the game-winner, after a first period where both teams managed to put one past their opponent's goaltender, Boston came out of the break and caught Ottawa flat-footed and off the opening face-off. Boston controlled the puck in the Ottawa zone and moved it with ease. Kaleigh Fratkin gave the puck over to Megan Keller on the left wing, and she moved up to the top of the circle and fired through a crowd in front of netminder Emerance Maschmeyer. Tapani got a stick on it and tipped it past Maschmeyer for her third goal of the campaign, giving Boston a lead they would not relinquish. For Boston, this was certainly a different performance than the one they'd given just two days earlier when these same two teams met...

WOLF PACK SHUT OUT BY BRUINS LAST SUNDAY

Image
By: Shay Costa, Howlings PROVIDENCE, RI -  Micheal DiPietro stopped all 24 shots he faced to lead the Providence Bruins to a 3-0 shutout of the Hartford Wolf Pack at the Amica Mutual Pavillion before 9,698. “It was a difficult night,” admits Pack Interim Head Coach Steve Smith. “The guys looked gassed an awful lot tonight.” Their loss against Providence came at the end of a three-in-three weekend for the New York Rangers AHL affiliate, and fatigue clearly was a key factor in the outcome. The first period was largely uneventful. The Wolf Pack had a power play opportunity at 5:44 after Bruins winger Luke Toporowski took a holding call. However, the Pack was unable to generate any offense on the man's advantage, and the period ended with neither team lighting the lamp. Providence scored what would prove to be the only goal they would need on the night after another failed Pack power play at 7:43. The Pack's Turner Elson was called for tripping Bruins defenseman Ian Mitchell. Fab...
